Split Ends by Nick Sharratt5/28/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() If you are in Newcastle before the end of September 2012 stop by and take a look. ![]() It is a tiny pen and ink drawing of Wilson’s hands complete with rings on each finger marking the figure out in roman numerals. There are several different originals from this book in the exhibition as well as notebooks kept by Jacqueline Wilson for My Sister Jodie. We also have a studio area inspired by Sharratt’s own workplace complete with light boxes that looks remarkably like the real thing. But my absolute favourite illustration in the gallery is a personal piece he did for Jacqueline Wilson to celebrate the ten millionth copy sold of her books. It’s this work that has been the starting point for my “Five Minute Faces” as I struggle to keep line to a minimum and learn when to stop adding detail. Fast and free shipping free returns cash on delivery available on eligible purchase. ![]() It is wonderful to be able to press your face almost up to the glass and study the pictures so closely. Buy Split Ends by Sharratt, Nick online on Amazon.ae at best prices. Although the figures remain simple there are lots of patterns and detail in the background which sets it apart from much of his other illustrations. He designed twelve different versions of the book cover alone. The work that really caught my eye was for Wilson’s novel “My Sister Jodie”. ![]()

From rats by robert sullivan5/28/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() “To begin with,” the author explains, “Edens Alley is L-shaped, a cobblestone strip that is surrounded by brick walls a walled-in lane that was like my Walden, though I’m not so nuts as to want to actually sleep there or anything.” This sentence tells you a lot about Sullivan’s style: it’s colloquial, levelheaded and funny. The resulting book, Rats: Observations on the History and Habitat of the City’s Most Unwanted Inhabitants, is clever, literate, insightful, funny and sometimes even lyrical. At night he hung out in an alley near garbage cans, watching rats through night-vision goggles by day he researched the history of rats in New York and elsewhere. Therefore, he began to study the rats about him. One day he realized that to ignore rats (the most common mammal in the world) in his beloved New York City would be to ignore one of America’s great immigrant success stories. Robert Sullivan is a naturalist renowned for two previous books, The Meadowlands and A Whale Hunt, both of which received many accolades. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() The analysis thus shows how the sharing of hidden acts of resistance on a public online-forum seems to make these acts subjectively less ‘decaf’ for the baristas, albeit without crossing the Žižekian threshold, which would allow for a characterization of these acts as ‘real’ resistance. ![]() The paper concludes that while useful in explaining the individual employees’ libidinal investment in and subjective experience of his or her resistance, the decaf-perspective also implies a rigid dichotomy between ‘real’ and ‘decaf’ resistance, which is rather unhelpful for distinguishing between different types of resistance. The explanatory force of this theoretical perspective is examined through the use of the online chat forum, where baristas at Starbucks, amongst other topics, describe how they as a form of resistance serve decaf coffee to customers who have ordered regular coffee. Theoretically, the article is based on Alessia Contu’s previous outline of the term and Slavoj Žižek’s theory of ideology. This paper investigates the term decaf resistance, which signifies a resistance, which, although experienced as risky, is harmless in reality, because it – like decaf coffee – is stripped of its potentially dangerous main ingredient. ![]()

Alma katsu the hunger5/28/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() While one could argue that the facts are already horrific enough, the author takes the suffering, terror, and dread even further still in this Oregon Trail story from hell that makes dysentery seem like a cakewalk. Many of the party died, and some of the survivors allegedly resorted to cannibalism to stay alive.Īlma Katsu’s re-imagining of this journey-while staying true to many of the real-life people, places, and events-also plays to the mystery surrounding the terrible fate of the Donner Party, injecting a speculative element in the form of supernatural horror. Instead of following the typical route, however, the Donner Party opted to travel the new Hastings Cutoff, encountering poor terrain and other difficulties that slowed them down considerably, until they became trapped in heavy snowfall somewhere in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. For context, in the May of 1846 a wagon train led by George Donner and James Reed set out from Independence, Missouri like so many other pioneer families hoping to settle a new life in California. The tragedy of the Donner Party is retold with a supernatural twist in The Hunger, a dark mix of historical fiction and horror. This does not affect the contents of my review and all opinions are my own. I received a review copy from the publisher. ![]()

Wild apples henry david thoreau5/28/2023 ![]() ![]() They contain high levels of cucurbitacins, the bitter compounds that give these fruits their name and act as a natural defense from invading pests and insects. ![]() Small and almost oblong, wild cucumbers look like the plump toddler versions of their long, lean domesticated cousins. By relying on any one variety of crop, humans make the food supply vulnerable to disease or changes in weather due to the climate crisis. Bananas are big business - $8 billion a year - and with this fruit facing threats like bacterial wilt and Panama disease, the concern over monoculture is understandable. This ensures an identical, seedless fruit, harvest after harvest.įor this reason, bananas serve as an excellent example of one of the criticisms of the genetic engineering of food: Monoculture. Cavendish bananas are easy to grow because they are cultivated from genetically identical plants that grow on the roots of a mother plant. Today, of the over 1000 varieties of bananas, Cavendish bananas make up more than half of bananas exported to the U.S. After the Cavendish banana arrived in the Canary Islands, it went into large-scale production and never ceased. ![]() The bananas we eat today are direct descendants of this British-grown variety first established in the 1830s. ![]() The next time you bite carefree through a banana, thank horticulturalist William Cavendish. ![]()

You Slay Me by Katie MacAlister5/27/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Nevertheless, anyone looking for humorous respite from heavier works will no doubt enjoy this one. In sum, this book requires a healthy suspension of disbelief as it is necessary to put aside all logic and reason to accept the characters and events. The mystery is better with a couple of really surprising twists and turns to keep the reader guessing, and the real highlight of the book are the secondary characters, especially Aisling's sidekick, Jim the canine demon whose snarky one liners steal the show. Moreover, despite the intense chemistry that he shares with Aisling, there is no real emotional connection between the two which undermines the romance. She thinks and does the most ridiculous things and is then surprised when they go wrong!Īlthough the love interest, Drake Verio, is certainly sexy, there is an underlying sleaziness to his actions and comments. She has got to be one of the most TSTL heroines to ever disgrace the pages of a novel. ![]() As she is exposed to the world of supernaturals around us, Aisling learns that she is a Guardian as well as a Wyvern's mate - the only problem is that the man with whom she feels an intense attraction is also a thief and her prime suspect for murder.Īisling is a likeable heroine well aware of her faults of which there are many. On her first job as a courier, Aisling Grey finds herself out of her depths in Paris when she discovers that her client has been the victim of an apparent demonic ritual. ![]() |
